Moments ago, five-time Trainer of the Year Freddie Roach held a press conference to announce that he will be working with the 2012 US Olmpic boxing team. "It's going to be a privelege to work with the Olympic boxers...I always dreamed about being an Olympian and being a Gold medalist, but I wasn't quite at that level at that time," Roach commented shortly after revealing the news. "I want to help the Olympic team get back in form and get some gold medals back in America and I think with the experience that I have, I think I can help the team and hopefully we'll get some gold medals."
According to Roach, he was first approached to coach the Philippine Olympic boxing team, no doubt due to his work with Filipino pound-for-pound champion Manny Pacquiao, however, he chose to instead work with his own country's team in hopes of restoring glory to America's amateur boxing program. "First I was asked to help train the Philippine Olympic team and I told Nick that I would like to help the American team, so we reached out and made the right contacts and everything came to this," Roach explained. "I'm very proud of this. I hope I can make a difference. We're going to work our asses off and I can't wait to start."
